The Toolbox

Online catalogue of nature-inclusive concepts 

At NiD4OCEAN, we have mapped all existing nature-inclusive designs and mitigation measures implemented in offshore wind farms and floating solar infrastructure across European Seas. These have been included in the Rich North Sea Toolbox.  

The Toolbox is an open knowledge platform developed by the Rich North Sea programme that allows users to explore and learn from nature-inclusive designs, mitigation measures and nature restoration initiatives in offshore environments. It brings together project examples, and practical implementation information to support users in translating knowledge into practice.

The NiD4OCEAN project has expanded the toolbox by including:  

  • New projects on nature-inclusive designs beyond the North Sea in the Toolbox’s map. Note that NiD4OCEAN is responsible for the inclusion of projects but not the related content provided by the developers of the NiDs.  
  • A new category on mitigation measures in the Toolbox’s map and the corresponding projects 
  • A new page on mitigation measures in the homepage that briefly describes the main pressures and impacts of offshore wind to marine ecosystems and links to the OCEaN mitigation database (our partner Renewables Grid Initiative (RGI) is the founding member, convener and moderator of the OCEaN coalition) 
  • A new page on project contributing to the Toolbox, where the specific contribution of different projects (including NiD4OCEAN) is detailed  

 

NiD4OCEAN cannot be held responsible for the content of any parts of this website other than the sections explicitly designated as NiD4OCEAN material. The contribution of NID4OCEAN will continue at least until the completion of the project in September 2027. Projects results relevant to the Toolbox (e.g. recommendations towards standards for selection and monitoring of NiDs) will be integrated as they become available. 

NiD structures and their classification based on Hermans et al. (2020)  

  • (a) Optimized scour protection layers: refers to an optimization of a standard scour protection design for a monopile or a substation;  
  • (b) optimized cable protection layers: refers to an optimization of a standard cable protection design for a subsea power cables or cable crossings,  
  • (c) add-on options: refer to structural additions in a design of an offshore substation (or a monopile), thus making NID its integral part;  
  • (d) standalone units: not part of the actual turbine structure eg artificial reefs
