NiD4OCEAN partners took part in WindEurope Annual Event 2026 in Madrid, engaging with the offshore wind community and contributing to ongoing discussions on nature-inclusive approaches to floating offshore wind.
A week of exchange across the offshore wind sector
Bringing together policymakers, industry representatives, researchers, and innovators, the WindEurope Annual Event provided a space to explore how offshore wind continues to scale up across Europe. Throughout the week, partners followed key discussions, attended thematic sessions, and connected with stakeholders working across the value chain.
Building on this exchange, the project also brought in a group of students who took part in the regional University Innovation Challenges in Denmark, Lithuania, Norway, and Spain. Their participation created a direct link between emerging ideas and the broader industry conversations taking place at the event.
From ideas to discussion: showcasing nature-inclusive concepts
This connection came into focus during the NiD4OCEAN side event, “Innovators Making Waves: Nature-Inclusive Concepts for Floating Offshore Wind.” The session brought together experts from academia, NGOs, and industry to reflect on how innovation can support offshore wind development while taking marine ecosystems into account.
The discussion was complemented by lightning talks presenting concepts developed through the Innovation Challenge Series. These included both Nature-Inclusive Designs (NIDs) and mitigation measures aimed at reducing environmental pressures or enhancing marine habitats around offshore wind infrastructure.
Alongside the session, NiD4OCEAN was also present in the poster area, extending these conversations in a more informal setting and allowing participants to engage directly with the ideas behind the concepts.
Extending dialogue beyond the session
Beyond the side event, NiD4OCEAN partners continued these exchanges throughout the week by engaging in discussions with other Horizon Europe projects and related initiatives. These interactions helped place the project’s work within a wider landscape of research and innovation efforts addressing offshore wind and marine sustainability.
At the same time, students remained actively involved—attending sessions, joining discussions, and connecting with different actors across the industry—further strengthening the link between emerging innovation and ongoing sector developments.
Looking ahead
By the end of the event, WindEurope 2026 had provided a valuable opportunity to share NiD4OCEAN’s work, connect with the offshore wind community, and build momentum for future collaboration.
The insights and connections developed throughout the week will continue to inform the project’s work on advancing nature-inclusive offshore wind solutions in Europe.
